Academic Work
Forge Detroit offers an opportunity to take part in the reshaping of their community.
Seven unit types are dispersed throughout the site to accommodate a diversity of residents while incorporating space for retail, workshops, home businesses, and live/work. Reigniting brick as a craft and trade, the project’s construction highlights and reinterprets Detroit’s architectural heritage of brickwork within its building fabric. Intricate brick detail work is found throughout the project, utilizing the opportunity to teach craft brickwork skills to local residents. In turn, they will have an opportunity to physically take part in rebuilding and reshaping their new community.
Through the return of craft brickwork, the project positions design and local, small scale development in the revitalization of the neighborhood.
